What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be predictably saved or is causing problems for neighboring teeth. At Northwest Dental, most extractions are simple procedures performed comfortably with local anesthesia, followed by straightforward aftercare and a plan for replacement when needed.

When an Extraction May Be Recommended

  • Severe decay or fracture that cannot be restored, even with a crown or root canal.
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease that has loosened the tooth.
  • Overcrowding or extra teeth, including baby teeth blocking adult teeth.
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment in select cases.
  • Malformed or nonfunctional teeth causing bite or hygiene problems.
  • Problematic wisdom teeth (if applicable to your case).

How a Simple Extraction Works

  • Evaluation and X-rays

We take digital X-rays to assess roots, bone, and surrounding structures, then review your options and the plan.

  • Local anesthesia

The area is fully numbed to keep you comfortable.

  • Loosening and removal

The tooth is gently loosened (elevator) and removed (forceps). If a tooth is brittle or resistant, we may section it into smaller pieces for a gentler removal.

  • Site care

Gauze is placed for pressure, and stitches may be used when needed. You’ll leave with clear instructions for a smooth recovery.

What to Expect After

  • Mild soreness and swelling are common for 24–48 hours and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
  • Keep pressure on the gauze as instructed, avoid vigorous rinsing or straws the first day, and stick to soft foods initially.
  • Most patients resume normal activities the next day, depending on the tooth and your comfort.

Replacing a Missing Tooth

When appropriate, we’ll discuss options to replace the tooth and protect your bite:

  • Dental implant and crown
  • Fixed bridge
  • Partial denture

Timely replacement helps prevent neighboring teeth from shifting and preserves chewing comfort.

What Our Patients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

An extraction is the removal of a tooth that is too damaged, infected, or poorly positioned to be restored, or when removal is needed to support orthodontic or bite goals.

You will be numb during the procedure. Expect pressure, not sharp pain. Mild soreness afterward is typical and usually managed with non-prescription medication.

Most simple extractions feel significantly better within 24–48 hours. Follow your aftercare instructions to support healing and reduce swelling.

We place gauze and give you written instructions for rest, diet, hygiene, and pain control. A follow-up may be scheduled to check healing or remove stitches if placed.

Not always. We prescribe them only when indicated by infection or medical history.

If you are ill the week before or the day of your extraction, call us. We may reschedule for your safety and comfort.
