Restore strength, function, and a natural look with custom tooth-colored restorations.

What Are Crowns and Bridges?

A crown — often referred to as a cap — is a custom covering that encases your entire tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. Crowns help protect teeth that cannot be restored with fillings or other options, providing long-lasting durability and an attractive, natural appearance.

Popular Crown Types

Porcelain crowns remain the top choice for most patients because they closely resemble your natural teeth. They’re crafted to match the shape, size, and color of your smile, offering beautiful results for years to come. With proper oral care, crowns — including those made via cutting-edge CEREC technology — may last well over a decade, although occasional replacement could be necessary due to normal wear.

Reasons for crowns

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings
  • Tooth has a root canal

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is advanced technology that enables your dentist to create and place custom ceramic crowns in a single visit—often within 1-2 hours. This process eliminates messy impressions, temporary crowns, and extra appointments.

Key Advantages:

  • No temporary crowns.
  • No messy impressions — digital scanning only.
  • Completed in one visit; no need for follow-ups to place the permanent crown.
  • Durable, natural appearance and feel — mimicking the translucency and contours of your natural teeth.

What to Expect: CEREC Crown Appointment

  • Initial Exam

Your dentist evaluates whether a crown is needed, then digitally scans your tooth using a small camera, ensuring precise fit and comfort.

  • Design and Fabrication

The 3D scan data is used to design your crown on a computer, and a milling machine creates your custom crown from high-quality ceramic — all in the dentist’s office, with no laboratory delays.

  • Placement

Your new crown is carefully fitted, adjusted, and then bonded to your tooth, restoring strength and appearance in just one session. Your bite is checked, and any final adjustments are made to ensure comfort.

  • Aftercare

You’ll receive instructions on brushing, flossing, and scheduling regular checkups to ensure your crown lasts. With proper care, CEREC crowns can last as long as traditional crowns.

Traditional Crowns

Traditionally, crown procedures require two appointments. At your first visit, molds are taken and your teeth are shaped. A temporary crown is placed while your permanent crown is produced in a lab — this can take about two weeks. Your second appointment involves removing the temporary crown and fitting the permanent crown, checking bite and fit before permanent placement.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a non-removable appliance that replaces missing teeth. “Traditional bridges” consist of porcelain fused to metal, attached to crowns on anchoring teeth (abutment teeth). Bridges restore chewing, speaking, confidence, and help maintain your facial shape.

What Does Getting a Bridge Involve?

Getting a bridge usually takes two or more visits. Your anchoring teeth are shaped and prepared, then an impression is sent to the lab to fabricate the bridge. You’ll wear a temporary bridge until your permanent one is ready. At your final visit, your bridge is adjusted and cemented for permanent use.

Reasons for a fixed bridge

  • Fill space created by missing teeth
  • Maintain facial shape
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting
  • Restore chewing and speaking ability
  • Upgrade from removable denture to permanent appliance

Same-Day Bridges with CEREC

Recent advances in dental technology make it possible for certain patients to receive a customized dental bridge in just one appointment using CEREC technology. By leveraging digital imaging and in-office milling systems, your dentist can design, fabricate, and place a ceramic bridge during a single visit — eliminating the need for temporary bridges and multiple appointments often required by traditional methods.
